ABOUT

This is a video I made for fun, but also to serve as a way to demonstrate my sound design skills and add to my portfolio.

The sound effects were designed from scratch by me using the Sytrus synthesiser in FL Studio:

  •  Thomas chuffing, hissing, and releasing steam

  •  Bertie's engine

  •  Bertie's wheels on the road

  •  Bertie's horn and Thomas' whistle

  •  The car passing Bertie and its horn at 1:32

  •  The plane's engine at 1:42

  •  Bertie's wheels as they cross the level crossing

The sounds were designed using a combination of the Sytrus synthesiser plugin and a Parametric Equaliser.

For instance, Bertie the bus's engine is a Saw wave reduced in pitch, with volume oscillation added to make it rumble, and took three EQs to get it sounding as it does.

The remaining sound effects were not designed by me:

  •  Train wheels rolling / carriages passing / train brakes squealing

  •  Water going into Thomas' tank

  •  Clapping / cheering / talking

All instruments that were designed by me in Sytrus are:

  •  The lead and harmony instrument in the main song

  •  All instruments in the second song except the flute, piano, and cabasa

  •  The strings, which were a preset heavily modified to sound more synth-y than stringy

  •  All whistles and horns

Almost all other instruments were presets that had to be modified in order to sound right, with very little remaining untouched. But it didn't make sense to design 100% of the instruments from scratch - if there is a preset that works fine (modified or as is), why waste time designing a new one?

The music itself is a complete remake of the original songs in the episode. All music was remade by ear - no sheet music was used as there isn't any available. Great attention had to be paid to microscopic details, especially in the percussion.
